Trek Package - Rolwaling Himal Trek

Type: Moderate to hard trek (tough if climb through Manglung La). Sherpa accompaniment is necessary.
Area: East of Kathmandu. This extremely quiet region is rarely visited by tourists and trekkers. Probably that is its greatest charm. One can savour the real Himalaya untarnished by crowd, noise and distractions.

Day-to-Day Itinerary

  • Day 01:
    Upon arrival at Kathmandu Tribhuvan International airport the guest will be received and transfered to the hotel.
    Evening: a short briefing about the trek.
    Overnight at the hotel in Kathmandu.
  • Day 02:
    After breakfast commence the tour of Kathmandu city, Sywambhunath, Pashupatinath, Boudhanath and Patan city.

  • Day 03:
    Early breakfast and drive to Charikot, from where Rolwaling Himal is visible in the distance. The drive to Charikot will take approximately 8 hrs.

  • Day 04:
    Start trek to Piguti, on the way you pass through several hamlets and then enter the village of Dolakha, a settlement where houses are crowded together. From the village turn right and then descend to Tamba Koshi. Trek along the right bank until you cross Dolti Khola by a suspension bridge. Malepu lies just ahead, follow the right bank of the river. This trek from here, has a few ups and downs and passes through a pleasant pine grove before you reach Piguti (920m). Duration- 6 hours.

  • Day 05:
    Pass the suspension bridge near the campsite and follow the path along the right side as the Gaurishanker range materializes on the far end of the valley. Continue along the path despite the river's name changing from Tamba Koshi to Bhote Koshi. After a while, you reach Shigati where a large tributary enters the left; out here, there is a check post. Cross the suspension bridge over the Shigati Khola; shortly afterwards the valley narrows and the right cliff becomes a sheer cliff again cross a suspension bridge before you reach Suri Dhoban village.
    Pass through the village of about ten houses and cross the Khare Khola via a suspension bridge. Here the banks of the Bhote Koshi are steep and making arable land scarce. Soon terraced hills appear and cultivated fields mark the village of Manthale (1070m). Duration of trek - 6 hours.

  • Day 06:
    Follow the path through the fields to a bridge over the river and cross to the right bank and climb a gently sloping stone-lined path with many ups and downs, which brings you to Congar where you cross a stream. A short distance further the valley becomes V-shaped, later you will see a waterfall on the opposite bank before you come to a cross -road with ascending path to Simigaon. From here, you part from the main route to Tibet and descend the path to the right and cross the bridge. After a trek through the zigzag path you emerge to terraced field and when reach mani stones and Chortens appear you are at Simigaon (1950m). Duration of trek 6 hours.

  • Day 07:
    From the campsite walk through the terraced field till you reach the ridge summit from where Gaurishanker (7134m) appears before you and the Rolwaling Chhu flows deeply below you. Enter a thick rhododendron forest and follow the zigzag path along the ridge to reach Shakpa with small fields. Here you enter the mountain on the Rolwaling side and climb through a forested area and leave it before the path descends but beware of the dangerous sections. Cyalche (1760m) lies a little away across a stream. Duration of trek 6 hours.

  • Day 08:
    From here follow the path with a short steep slope near Rolwaling Chhu and then slowly wind to the villages of Nyimare, Ramding and Gyabrug (where the houses have stone walls and wooden roofs weighed down with stones) before it reaches Beding (3690m) a village with 30-40 houses and a monastery. Camp near the riverbed. From this point, view Menlungtse (7181m),the premier peak of Rolwaling Himal. Trek Duration 7 hrs. From here you can also make a round trip to Manlung La (5510m) in three days.

  • Day 09:
    About ten minutes from the village you pass the Manlung La route on the left as you follow the right bank of the Rolwaling Chhu. A gentle climb continues, and as the valley opens to U-Shape the path levels and you enter Na Gaon. Cross a wooden bridge after the village and continue along the grass-covered valley with Chobutse (6685m) and Chugimago (6259m) in view. The terminal moraines of Ripimo Shar Glacier and Tram Bau Glacier push in up ahead blocking the valley, cross a wooden bridge and a little further on leave the main path to go to Omai Tsho via a path on the left. From here climb to a ridge to achieve an excellent lookout of Kang Nachugo (6735m) and the mountains surrounding Ripimo Glacier. To go to Tsho Rolpa, skirt around the terminal moraine of Ripimo Glacier passing between Ripimo and Tram Bau Glacier to enter the ablation valley on the right bank of Tram Bau Glacier. After a while trek the far end of the valley, like folding screen stands the Pigphera - Go Nup (6666) and Pigphera-Go Shar (6730m). At last, reach Rolpa Chobu (4540m). Trek - 5 1/2 hrs.

  • Day 10:
    Rest day at Rolpa Chobu, or descend back down to Beding if the altitude makes you feel sick.

  • Day 11:
    Backtrack to Charikot. Dinner and overnight camp.
  • Day 12:
    Dinner and overnight at camp.
  • Day 13:
    Dinner and overnight at camp.
  • Day 14:
    Dinner and overnight at camp.
  • Day 15:
    Drive back to Kathmandu.
    Evening: Farewell dinner at a local restaurant.
    Overnight at the hotel in Kathmandu.
  • Day 16:
    Transfer to airport for final departure.
