INTRODUCTION:
The Rara National park is located in northwestern Nepal about 375 kms. air distance
from Kathmandu. It was established in 1976 with an area of 106 sq. km. It is the
smallest national park in Nepal but contains the country's largest lake (Rara Lake,
10.8 sq. km) at an elevation of 2990m. The National Park elevations range from 1800
m. to 4048 m and contain mainly coniferous forest. The area around the lake is dominated
by blue pine, black juniper, West Himalayan spruce, oak, Himalayan cypress and other
similar species. There was once a settlement here, but today, only the abandoned
ruins remain on the northern banks. Wild animals such as the Himalayan black bear,
leopard, the Himalayan thar, ghoral, musk deer, wild boar and the red panda can
be found here. Summer rainfall is low but winter snows can be heavy and persistent.
Since the region is fairly high and free from monsoon thunderstorms, summer season
is ideal for trekking. Winters are cold but autumn season trekking is rewarded with
profusion of alpine flowers. The region is less crowded with trekkers owing to its
remoteness. The added cost of transport and other expenses is made up by the solitude
and magnificence of the highland scenery. Trekkers must carry their own food and
tents as the region lacks in food supply and the high caste orthodox population
here does not open their homes as easily as the tribal and Tibetan groups in central
and east Nepal. This trip is literally "off the beaten track" and is quite different
to anything that is seen on other treks in Nepal. Rara is a high altitude lake ringed
with forests of pine, juniper and spruce with a back drop of the Himalaya This trek
is rather strenuous and is rather expensive due to scarcity of labour and food,
nevertheless it is ideal for those seeking solace in the solitude of the wilderness.
The fish species recorded in the lake are the Snow trout and there are many resident
gallinaceous birds and migrant waterfowl. The great-crested grebe, black-necked
grebe, and red-crested pochard are also seen in winter. Other birds are the Impeyan
pheasant, Kalij pheasant, blood pheasant, and snow cock and chukor partridge.
