Also known as Kingdom of “Lomanthang”, Mustang is a tiny Himalayan Kingdom with
allegiance to The King of Nepal. The present King is- Jigme Parbal Bista. The King
of Nepal conferred the honorary title “Bista” (a high caste title in Nepal). Though
his duty is largely ceremonial, he is respected by the people and consulted about
many issues by villagers throughout Mustang. The mountains feature the Annapurna
Range and Dhaulagiri Range. The route entails traveling across a desert like landscape,
painted in every hue of gray and yellow.
Though the people call themselves “Lobas”-people from Lo, they are very much Tibetan
and practice a sophisticated culture and economy. Though a restricted area, a limited
number of visitors are allowed to visit this region accompanied by a Liaison Officer
and upon payment of restricted area permit fees of minimum US$ 70 per person per
day for minimum 10 days.
